- Start at ABINGDON ST HELEN
- From St Helen’s main porch go straight ahead into
West Saint Helen’s Street for SALVATION ARMY HALL ON RIGHT (0.1 MILES)
- Continue to T-Junction with High Street and go
left into one-way system, keeping to nearside lane. (After c.30 yards
note disused Congregational Church on right at The Square). At
Pedestrian lights continue forward along Ock Street for c50 yds for
BAPTIST CHURCH (large forecourt) on right (0.2)
- Continue down Ock Street and take first right,
signed Abingdon School, into Conduit Road for TRINITY METHODIST and
UNITED REFORM CHURCH (0.2)
- Continue a few yards to crossroads and go left
into Park Road for SAINT MICHAEL & ALL ANGELS (0.2)
- Contiinue Park Road until traffic barriers at end.
Go right into Spring Road and at T-junction (mini-roundabout) go left
into Faringdon Road. Continue for c0.5 miles, crossing A34 and take
first left into Barrow Road for SHIPPON ST MARY MAGDALENE (1.1).
- Return to and continue Faringdon Road into
Chilswell Road and Long Tow, following perimeter of sports field on
your right. After c 1.2 miles, near A34 flyover, go left at T-junction
into Abingdon to Wootton Road, B4017. Continue for c 0.3 miles until
edge of Wootton Whitecross and turn right into Sunningwell Road for
SUNNINGWELL SAINT LEONARD (2.4)
- Continue, keeping left at Flowing Well Public
House, into Quarry Road and then Bruncombe Road, signed Boar’s Hill,
for BAYWORTH BAPTIST CHAPEL (0.7)
- Return for a few yards and go left into Green
Lane, signed Radley, then left at T-junction after c 0.5 miles. At
staggered crossroads cross Oxford to Abingdon Road, A4183, into
Sugworth Lane. Continue for c 1.2 miles, crossing A34, and at
T-junction go right onto Kennington to Abingdon Road for RADLEY ST
JAMES the GREAT (2.8)
- Continue Kennington to Abingdon Road, which
becomes White’s Lane. After c 0.5 miles go right at T-Junction, then
right again at mini-roundabout, signed Oxford, into Twelve Acre Drive
(Abingdon perimeter road). Take first left into Peachcroft Road. At
shopping precinct car park bear left into Lindsay Drive for PEACHCROFT
CHRISTIAN CENTRE at end of car park on your right (1.5)
- Go left off Lindsey Drive through barriers
immediately opposite church and follow cycle path along two sides of
playground to thebarriers diagonally opposite. Go through and left into
Appleford Drive for ALL SAINTS METHODIST CHURCH on left (0.4)
- Continue to traffic lights at Boundary House
Public House and cross Oxford Road (staggered crossroads) into
Northcourt Road. After c 200 yards turn left into forecourt of CHRIST
CHURCH (0.2)
- Return to traffic lights. Go right and continue
until junction with Radley Road for OUR LADY and ST EDMUND (0.8)
- Continue Oxford Road into Vineyard. At lights,
signed District Council and Superstore, go left into Abbey Close and
then first right (but still named Abbey Close). Where road swings to
left facing Guildhall go under archway on right for SAINT NICHOLAS
(0.4) (Before turning under archway note Abbey House Council Building
on your left and the gateway to the right of it for access to Abbey
Gardens and the ruins of Abingdon Abbey).
- From St Nicholas cross Bridge Street and follow
East St Helen’s Street to the left of County Hall to return to St
Helen’s. (0.2)
Optional extras: 6A, B, C, D:
Use directions from Shippon to edge of Wootton
Whitecross. Continue B4017 to Wootton Village. At Bystander Public
House and Pedestrian lights cross into small shopping parade for St
PIUS X (2.6). (Alternatively take longer route to Wootton via DRY
SANDFORD ST HELEN (3.7 FROM Shippon plus 1.2 to St Pius). Go back a few
yards then left for WOOTON ST PETER (0.3) Continue and take first
right, signed Old Boar’s Hill. After 1 mile and
short, sharp climb, go right into Tarn Way and Berkeley Road. At
T-Junction after 0.6 miles go right for ST THOMAS MORE (1.9) IN GROUNDS
OF HOUSE "Grace Dieu", shortly after Lincombe Lane on left.
Return
to and past T-Junction and take first right for BAYWORTH BAPTIST (1
mile) on right after steep descent. Go right into Quarry Road for
SUNNINGWELL. Return 300 yards and go right at Flowring Well. 6B, c and
D add 3.4 miles; 6A, B, C, D add 5.7.
8A and B: At
junction with A4183 go left and after 0.4 miles go right, signed
Kennington, into Bagley Wood Road. Cross A34 and where houses begin be
sure to go left into narrow lane which continues Bagley Wood Road for
KENNINGTON GOOD SHEPHERD (2.4) on left immediately before T-junction
with SAINT SWITHUN, NEW AND OLD CHURCHES ACROSS THE ROAD AHEAD (0.1).
From Church go left for Radley (2). Adds 1.6 miles.
