  4. N.B. The right turn to Culham c 0.7 miles from Abingdon bridge is more direct and saves 0.7 miles, but is extremely dangerous on this fat road, even for the most experienced cyclists.
  5. Return to Tollgate Road and continue over river bridges. At T-junction with B4016 go right and continue into Church Street for SUTTON COURTENAY ALL SAINTS on left (1.3)
  6. Continue Church Street. At green triangle go left into High Street, signed Milton Heights. After c 0.6 miles go left into Frilsham Street, signed Village Hall and Catholic Church, and right into Christ Church Way for CHRIST CHURCH (0.8)
  7. Return to High Street. At mini-roundabout take right fork into Milton Road. After c 1 mile, on entry into MILTON Village, go left at T-junction. Continue c 0.2 miles for METHODIST CHURCH on left, noting green-painted earlier chapel adjacent to it (0.3)
  8. Cross road aqnd go back along High Street for c 100 yards. At Admiral Benbow Public House turn left, signed Milton Manor, for ST BLAISE (0.1)
  9. Continue into Manor Grounds for Manor House and CHALLENOR CHAPEL (0.1)

Pass Edward Street and Exbourne Road on right and shortly after Post Office go right through traffic barrier, into Park Road for ABINGDON ST MICHAEL & ALL ANGELS (2.3)
  13. Continue Park Road and take first right into Conduit Road for TRINITY METHODIST and UNITED REFORM CHURCH (0.2)
  14. Continue Conduit road. At T-junction go left into Ock Street for BAPTIST CHURCH (large forecourt) on left (0.2)
  15. Cross Ock Street to opposite pavement and walk against direction of traffic.
  16. (After c100 yards note disused Congregation Church on left at The Square). Continue into High Street and take first right, still against direction of one-way traffic, into West Saint Helen’s Street, for SALVATION ARMY HALL on left (0.2)
  17. Continue West St Helen’s Street to return to St Helen’s Church (0.1)
  18. N.B. A new cycle path from Milton to Steventon, probably running alongside the railway, is planned for 2003-4. It will create a much shorter ride between the two villages, removing two hills and the busy section near the A34 intersection. Once it opens Steventon can be included easily in the main route and no longer listed as the comparatively hard optional extra described here.

Optional extras: 8A and 8B:

Visit St BLAISE and CHALLENOR CHAPEL before MILTON METHODIST. Then continue High Street to entrance to Business Park. Cross road to use cycle path to A34 major intersection. Use path to cross A4130 to Didcot and under flyover. Continue on footpath alongside A4130, signed Wantage, up Milton Hill. At lights c 0.6 miles from flyover turn right onto B4017 and descend Steventon Hill for METHODIST CHUCH on left. Continue for c.150 yards and go left at first of two adjacent left turns into Causeway. Pass School on your right and cross railway (1.6) for SAINT MICHAEL & ALL ANGELS (0.7)

Return to and continue B4017. Visit DRAYTON METHODIST (2.7) before ST PETER’S, continuing Church Lane into Henley’s Lane to rejoin B4071 for Abingdon.
