Annual Report 2011 - [download pdf]
The Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust was set up in 1964 with the aims of helping with grants to repair and restore the churches of Oxfordshire, of encouraging wider interest in them and of raising funds for these purposes.

At its meetings during the year
February to Sept 2010

the Trust approved 39 grants to churches and chapels throughout the County,
 totalling £164,000.
Since its inception the value of its grants has amounted to some
£3.5 million.

There are some 550 churches of all denominations in the county, some 300 of medieval origin and many dating back 1000 years.
While their continuing primary purpose is to provide places of public worship, they are treasured for their architectural beauty and for their connections with national and local history and as focal points in their communities; without them our landscapes and towns would be much poorer.

The National Churches Trust furthers our cause at national level and we welcome the support it in turn provides to the national network of county trusts.

In particular we welcome the introduction of a Partnership Scheme, which allows OHCT to recommend smaller repair projects for grant aid by the NCT.

The table on the right shows grants recommended to NCT by OHCT, along with those made directly by OHCT.

The Landfill Community Fund scheme
This scheme allows landfill operators to obtain tax benefits and to distribute a percentage of their profits for environmental purposes.  Projects eligible for funding under the scheme include places of worship, with the condition that they have to be within a 10 miles radius of an operator’s landfill site.   Recent changes to the scheme have had the effect of the landfill operators no longer passing their funds through this Trust.  Churches and chapels who are seeking funds should check the websites of the three companies shown below who operate in Oxfordshire, and make a direct application if they fit the criteria. A summary is shown below.

WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd)    www.wren.org.uk
Applications for adapting churches for community use can be made at any time. Applications for repair projects that are over £50,000 are reviewed on an annual basis with the process starting in February. Please contact Deanery Representatives.

Viridor Credits           www.viridor-credits.co.uk

This company operates from Ardley and accepts applications from churches within a 10 mile radius. They prefer a community use aspect to the project. Please contact Charles Hebditch of OHCT prior to making an application. bicester-islip.representative@ohct.org.uk

Grundon Waste Management   www.grundon.com
This company is at present not making any funds available to places of worship.

Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment     www.trustforoxfordshire.org.uk
This trust is currently in transition, but may in future be able to support projects for churches seeking to reduce their carbon footprint or for increasing biodiversity in churchyards. Repair and re-ordering projects will not be considered.
